President of India
The president of India is the head of state of the Republic of India. The President of India is the formal executive, legislature, and judiciary of India and is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces. The elections of the president of India are by indirect voting from the elected members of the Parliament of India as well as the State Legislatures. The President of India serves for a total of five years. The official residence of the President of India is the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The President is elected by members of an electoral college consisting of elected members of both Houses of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies of the states in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.

According to Article 58 (1)(b), the President of India must be a citizen of India, not less than 35 years of age, and qualified for election as a member of the Lok Sabha. His term of office is five years and he is eligible for re-election.

He can proclaim an emergency in the country if he is satisfied that a grave emergency exists whereby the security of India or any part of its territory is threatened whether by war or external aggression or armed rebellion.

The 14th President of India
Ram Nath Kovind was born in the month of October 1945 in Uttar Pradesh, India. He is the current President of India. He served as a Governor of Bihar during the period of 2015 to 2017. He also served as a member of Rajya Sabha by representing the Uttar Pradesh (1994-2006), a Union Government Standing Counsel in Supreme Court (1980 - 1993), a Union Government Counsel at Delhi High Court (1977-1979).
Former Presidents of India
Pranab Mukherjee(b.1935) was elected as the 13th President of India, after over four decades of life in active politics. He has held various posts in the cabinet ministry for the Government of India such as Finance Minister, Foreign Minister, Defense Minister, and Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission. The term period was 25 July 2012 to 25 July 2017.
Smt Pratibha Patil(b.1934) the first woman to become the President of India, she was also the first female Governor of Rajasthan. The term period was 25 July 2007 to 25 July 2012.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (1931-2015) the first scientist to become the President. He played a leading role in the development of India's ballistic missile and nuclear weapons program, a writer and a motivator. The term period was 25 July 2002 to 25 July 2007.
K.R.Narayanan (1920-2005) served as India's ambassador to Thailand, Turkey, China, and the United States of America. He was also a chancellor in several universities besides the vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University. The term period was 25 July 1997 to 25 July 2002.
Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma (1918-1999) was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and the Union Minister for Communications. He also served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Maharashtra. The term period was 25 July 1992 to 25 July 1997.
R.Venkataraman (1910-20019) served as Minister of Finance and Industry and later as Minister of Defense. The term period was 25 July 1987 to 25 July 1992.
Giani Zail Singh (1916-1994) was the Chief Minister of Punjab and Union Home Minister in 1980. The term period was 25 July 1982 to 25 July 1987.
Neelam Sanjiva Reddy (1913-1996) was the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The term period was 25 July 1977 to 25 July 1982.
Dr Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (1905-1977) was elected to be in Rajya Sabha in 1952. He served as the Advocate General of Assam. He became the fifth President of India in 1974.
V.V. Giri (1894-1980) was acting President of India for a few months in 1969 before getting elected for a full term. [3 May 1969-20 July 1969 and July 1969-1974]. He was the fourth President of India.
Dr. Zakir Hussain (1897-1969) was the vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, helped found Jamia Milia Islamia, and was one of the great educationists of his time. He was Vice President of the country from 1962 to 1967. He was the first President to die in office. The term period was 13 May 1967 to 3 May 1969.
Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975) was a prominent philosopher and vice-chancellor of Andhra University and a great scholar of religion and philosophy. His birthday is celebrated as Teacher's Day in India. The term period was 13 May 1962 to 13 May 1967.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad (1884-1963) was the first President of India. He was an independent activist. The term period was 26 January 1950 to 13 May 1962.
The President's Oath
The President takes the following oath in the presence of the Chief Justice of India:
'I,(name of the President), do swear in the name of God(or solemnly affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President( or discharge the functions of the President) of the Republic of India, and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the law and that I will devote myself to the service and well-being of the people of the Republic of India'.
Vice-President of India
The Vice-President is elected by members of an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.
He must be a citizen of India, not less than 35 years of age. He is eligible for election as a member of a Rajya Sabha. His term of office is 5 years and he is also eligible for re-election. His removal from office is in accordance with the procedure prescribed in Article 67(b).
He is ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and acts as President when the latter is unable to discharge his functions due to absence, illness, or any other cause or till the election of a new President( to be held within six months when a vacancy is caused by death, resignation or removal or otherwise of President).
