Easy Way to Teach multiplication to kids

Teaching multiplication and multiplication tables to children is a quite tough task. As a parent, we feel that our child is struggling to remember the multiplication tables. You might have many queries like “how to teach multiplication to struggle students?”.

Teaching Multiplication to kids

I am here to Share with you all the tips which I followed to teach multiplication to my 6 years old child. And now, my child can say the product when I say the numbers. Read on the post to know the steps and tips that I have followed to teach the multiplication tables to my child.

As you all know, the four basic mathematical operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The child can learn addition and subtraction easily. But when it comes to multiplication and division, they might feel difficult to learn. The multiplication concept is introduced to the grade2 students at school. You can also start teaching multiplication earlier.

To teach the multiplication concepts to the children, you must be patient in teaching. Because the children need some time to understand and memorize the multiplication concept. It makes learning multiplication easy for the children.

The 2 things which you must do while teaching the multiplication strategies are consistent practice and revision.

Consistent practice is a must, that you must make the kids learn or write the multiplication tables every 2/3 hours once. You need to make them practice the multiplication concepts at least 5-6 times per day. Make them practice the same multiplication tables in the next following days until they are strong in numbers. Then move on to the next multiplication table. Remember to revise the older one before start practicing the new multiplication tables.

Introduce the concept: Repeated Addition

When you add the same number repeatedly(again and again), it is called repeated additionMultiplication is nothing but a repeated addition. It is the faster way for repeated addition. The symbol of multiplication is X.

For example: 6 x 5 = 30 is same as  (5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5=30)

It means that 6 times of 5. So, the repeated addition results in multiplication.

You can read 6 x 5 = 30 in the following ways. They are

  • 6 multiplied by 5 equals 30
  • 6 times of 5 equals 30
  • 6 groups of  5 equal 30

Where 6 is the multiplicand, 5 is the multiplier and 30 is the product. Below, the presentation gives you a better understanding.

The child does not understand when you teach that multiplication means repeated addition. Instead when you give a real-time example, then they definitely understand the need for multiplication over the repeated addition. You can compare the examples of smaller quantities with that of larger quantities.

For Example: First, you explain a scenario that the child goes to the shop to buy biscuits of 5 rs. He wants 2 packets of biscuits. How much does he want to pay to buy 2 packets of biscuits?

For the above questions, the child gives the answer easily by doing the addition operation.

Now, You tell them that a small grocery shop owner buys 100 packets of biscuits from a big wholesale shop. One packet of biscuits cost rs 5. How much he needs to pay to buy the biscuits?

Now, you explain to them that now you cannot add 5 for 100 times. It takes a long time to find the answer. So, the multiplication concept is introduced.

Start to teach the simple multiplication table

You can start teaching the simple tables first. You can start with 1 table, 2 tables, 5 tables, 10 tables, 3 tables, and so on.

So always start with 1, 2, 5, 10 multiplication tables. Then teach the remaining multiplication tables.

Teach them the multiplication rules

  • Any number that is multiplied by zero (0) is always Zero.
         Eg: 5 x 0 = 0 , 12 x 0 = 0 and so on.
  • Any number that is multiplied by one (1) is the number itself.

           Eg: 5 x 1 = 5, 10 x 1 = 10 and so on.

  • When you change the order of the numbers, the answer remains the same.
           Eg: 3 x 2 = 6, 2 x 3 =6.

Teach the multiplication tables with the help of blocks/diagrams

Multiplication Strategies

1. Teach them the skip counting methodology

Make your child learn the 2/5/10 skip counting. You and your child sit along together and make the song for the skip counting.

Eg; 2's count - 2, 4, 6, 8 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and so on
       5's count - 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and so on.

2. Teach them multiplication with real-time examples

  • You can teach them multiplication with the help of blocks, lego blocks, pulses.
  • Sort the blocks/ pulses into groups of 1 block, 2 blocks, 3 blocks, 4 blocks, 5 blocks, 6 blocks, and so on.
  • You teach them 1 time 1 (1x1) means to take a one-block one time from the group.
  • 2 times 1 (2 x 1) means to pick a two-blocks 1 time from the group. 3 times 3 (3 x 3)means to pick 3 blocks 3 times from the group.
  • After grouping the blocks, ask the child to count the blocks.

3. Practice

After teaching the concept, make them write each multiplication table as a number of times as they can. The regular practice makes them do the multiplication tables fast.

Final Note

Teaching is always fun. Be patient when you teach multiplication to your kid. The child can easily learn the new concepts if we teach in the way they like it. So, teach multiplication to your children in an easy and fun method. 'Momovators' is all about parenting, education, health, and fitness.
