What are ordinal numbers?
The ordinal numbers represent the position of the objects in an array of objects. In other words, it tells us the position or rank, or order of the objects. When we indicate the position of the objects in a row and column using numbers is called ordinal numbers
When to Introduce the ordinal numbers?
The concept of the order of numbers can be introduced to senior kg and grade 1 children. For grade 1 children, you can teach the spelling of the ordinal numbers. Whereas for the kindergarten, you no need to teach spelling.
How to teach ordinal numbers?
I have shared the methods which I have followed to teach my kid. Read on the below hands-on activities.
1. Competition
When we introducing the new concept directly with the reading and writing, the child might feel very difficult to learn it. So, you have to introduce the words like first, second, and so on in your daily conversation.
You can keep the competition between you and your kids or between the siblings. For eg, You can set the timer and ask them who finish this task first. You can also keep the running race competition between them.
So, these real-time activities make the kids recognize and understand the words of first, second, and so on without learning.
2. Match the number
The child can understand the meanings of the ordinal number verbally and now is the time to introduce them to learn visually. You can write the numbers on one side and the ordinal number on another side. Now, you can tell the child to match the numbers to that of the ordinal number.
The child can easily do this because the number will be the same on both sides and they will see only the new 2 letters such as th or rd along with the number.
It is a fun and simple activity to learn this concept. You need to tell the difference while they are matching. You must mention that the numbers such as 1st, 2nd, and so on represent the position of the objects.

3. Coloring
Now, the child understands the numbers such as 1st, 2nd, and so on visually by matching activity. So, the next step is to make the child work with the ordinal number through the coloring activity. You can draw any pictures and tell the child to color the picture by telling the position of the objects.
For eg, you can tell them to color the 3rd person in the queue. Refer to the below activity to do this.

4. Fun Games
You can play fun games with the child. Place their toys in order. Write the position below the toys. For eg, If you are placing the animal's toys, you can ask the child the questions such as which animal comes first, what is the position of the tiger, which animal comes last, and so on. The hands-on activities keep them engaged.
5. Worksheets
when the child understands the concepts well. You can prepare customized worksheets that include the various activities on the ordinal numbers. The worksheets help the child to explore more on this concept such as position identification, coloring the right position, and so on.
