The first step is to teach the definition of adverbs. So, instead of teaching them the exact definition, you can teach them in an easily understandable way.
Adverb means describing the verb. When the word describes the verb, it is known as an adverb.
The above simple term is easily understandable by kids. It also delivers the meaning of the adverb.
So, let us start with the formal definition of adverbs.

What are adverbs?
- It means describing the verb. When the word describes the verb, it is known as an adverb.
- It describes or adds meaning to the verb.
- It modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even a sentence.
- The adverbs tell us how, when, or where the action of the verb takes place.
- We generally add 'ly' or 'ily' to other words to form adverbs. There are irregular adverbs where we don't add 'ly' or 'ily' to other words. It means that most of the adverbs end in 'ly' or 'ily' but not all.
Some examples are:
a) He reached early.
b) She left her bag upstairs.
c) Eva dances gracefully.
You can ask the children to frame the question in the above sentences.
a) When did he reach? early
b) Where did she leave her bag? upstairs
c) How does Eva dance? gracefully
Some examples of adverbs tell us how an action takes place: slowly, happily, sadly, gracefully, beautifully, softly, smoothly, quickly, lightly, quietly, and so on.
Some examples of adverbs tell us Where an action takes place: inside, outside, upstairs, downstairs, here, there, around, and so on.
Some examples of adverbs that tell us when an action takes place: now, soon, late, early, today, yesterday, never, often, always, and so on.
So, teach the kids to find whether the adverb is describing how, when, or where an action is taking place in a sentence.
